TruSkool Dance Styles
Your crew’s showcase should demonstrate the following dance styles:

B-Boying (Breaking or Breakdancing) – Music Ref: Funk / Hip Hop / Breakbeat
‘A dance that evolved in the Bronx of New York during the mid to late 70s. It describes dancing to the drum break of a record and is the dance most associated with hip hop culture. Breaking is a street dance style that involves toprock (stand up dance), footwork (on the floor), powermoves (normally spinning moves) and freezes (stopping in a pose)’

Locking – Music Ref: Funk / Soul (eg. James Brown)
‘A dance style that developed during the ‘Soul Train’ funk era of the early 70s on the West Coast of America. Locking was pioneered by Don Campbell and his dance group ‘The Lockers’. It is a loose but sharp stop & start dance which involves a combination of snappy arm movements, funky steps, character, acrobatics and rhythmic coordination.’

Popping – Music Ref: Electro Funk / Disco / G Funk (eg. Parliament Funkadelic)
‘Popping involves tensing muscles in the body to the beat of the music to create an illusional ‘pop’. Influenced by robot, mime and the funk dances that preceded it, the popping dance style evolved in the late 70s and quickly became popularised in the media during the 80s as it became assimilated into hip hop culture. Many famous sub styles and moves developed from popping culture to include waving & gliding (eg. the moonwalk)’
